What Are the First Signs of Having Cataracts?

March 15 2023

Cataracts are a condition that affects the lens of the eye, causing it to become cloudy. They usually develop slowly over time and can be difficult to detect until they’re quite advanced.

Read on as a Lake Steven, WA optometrist talks about cataracts along with some early warning signs that you should watch out for.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye that causes blurred vision. Cataracts can affect both eyes, and they’re most common in older people.

They typically develop slowly, so you may not notice them until they’ve gotten worse. Cataracts can be treated with surgery or other types of medical intervention, but as of yet, there’s no cure.

Early Warning Signs of Cataracts.

If you have any of the following symptoms, it’s important to make an appointment with your eye doctor right away:

Limited Night Vision

Cataracts can make it difficult to see objects in the dark, making it harder for your eyes to adjust to changing light levels.

Difficulty Seeing Closeup Objects

You may have trouble reading small print or seeing objects close up, such as when you’re cooking or sewing

Difficulty Seeing Faraway Objects

You might find it harder to focus on objects far away, like traffic lights or street signs while driving at night.

Other Early Warning Signs

  • Blurred vision that doesn’t improve when you change your glasses or contact lenses.
  • Capsule-shaped spots in your field of vision.
  • Colored halos around lights at night.
  • Double vision (seeing two images).

What Happens When Cataracts Go Untreated?

If cataracts are left untreated, your vision will slowly worsen over time. The lens will become more opaque and the ability to focus on objects will be reduced. As this happens, you may notice a gradual loss of clarity in your central vision that makes it increasingly harder to see faces or drive at night.

Eventually, if left untreated long enough, common treatments like cataract surgery won’t be able to restore your eyesight completely. In effect, there won’t be any useful retina tissue left behind after so many years of living with untreated cataracts.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is worth talking with your doctor about them. Cataracts tend to develop slowly and may not be noticeable at first. However, they can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated in time.
