Keeping Your Eyes Healthy As You Age

July 1 2021

Have you noticed your vision changing over time? It’s no secret that aging will affect your eyesight. As you grow older, it becomes even more important for you to protect your eyes. In this article, a Marysville, WA optometrist offers some advice on keeping your eyes in good condition as you age.

Common Issues

There are a handful of issues we often see in patients over 50. These include cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, dry eyes, astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and diabetic retinopathy. Knowing your family history can be very beneficial, as this can help discern if you have an elevated risk of any specific issues.

Warning Signs

Keep an ‘eye’ out for symptoms of developing vision problems. These include squinting to read signs, having difficulty with small print, or having trouble driving at night. White spots, flashes, swelling, tearing, redness, blurred or double vision, haze, halos, and/or burning are also warning signs. It’s important to note that many vision problems are asymptomatic at first. You may not notice anything until the issue has progressed to a point where treatment is no longer viable. That’s why you should contact your optometrist immediately if you notice anything unusual … no matter how minor you think it is.

Exams

Eye problems can sound quite scary. And, to be fair, it is frightening to face a decline in your vision. However, one of the worst things you can do is put off your appointments because you’re afraid of getting bad news. There are treatment options for many common issues. These may include things like special glasses, electronic devices, surgery, and/or medication. As mentioned above, the sooner an issue is caught and treated, the better. Keep in mind that vision problems in seniors can also cause or contribute to falls, which can in turn cause a whole slew of other issues. The worst thing you can do is nothing!

Staying Healthy

Fortunately, taking care of yourself will also help keep your eyes healthy. Eat a good diet, and make sure you’re getting enough exercise. Limit smoking and drinking, and try not to spend too much time online. Last but not least, remember to always protect your eyes with sunglasses when you go outdoors during the day.
